Apollo 13 (1995)

His Review:

When 3 astronauts, Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton), and Jack Swigart (Kevin Bacon), head for the moon on a routine mission, the oxygenation system malfunctions and they have only a limited amount of time to live before the carbon dioxide levels build up too high.  It’s now up to the boys (Gary Sinise and Ed Harris) at the NASA command center in Houston to get the guys home safely.

Based on real events and directed by Ron Howard (Backdraft, The Dilemma, A Beautiful Mind), Apollo 13 is an inspirational and heart-felt emotional ride that will entertain anyone with a pulse.  It was nominated for 9 Academy Awards including Best Picture and screenplay, and won 2 of those Oscars for Editing and Sound.  Solid performances by the 5 star actors make Apollo 13 appealing to the audience as though they lived it (even if they hadn’t been born yet).  Appearing on my personal top 100 list, Apollo 13 was a gem the first time I saw it and still continues to entertain as I grow older.  Co-starring Kathleen Quinlan.
