My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016)
Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian (John Corbett) have a 17 year old daughter who is embarrassed by her giant Greek family. Toula desperately doesn’t want her to go out of state to college, but Paris (Elena Kampouris) can’t wait to get away. Still living next door to her parents, Toula feels overwhelmed with the changes facing her while still trying to be romantic with her husband. Focus changes however when Gus (Michael Constantine) discovers that his marriage certificate wasn’t signed and that he and Maria (Lainie Kazan) aren’t really married. Not wanting to settle for a simple signature, Toula’s mother wants a real wedding!
With the same crazy cast returning many years later, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 feels a bit forced and unnecessary. The nostalgia is there and so are the laughs (which is the important thing, right?) but when the movie is over, I’m not sure what I felt about the movie. I almost wished this was installment #3, and that we saw a sequel 5-7 years ago. The 14 year wait between the 2 films seems strange and doesn’t make this movie as enjoyable as it could have been. Please don’t get me wrong, this movie was an easy and enjoyable watch, but that is because I loved the first movie. This sequel is just more of the same so take it or leave it. I did like the interwoven story of Toula’s parent’s wedding and the daughter’s struggle to leave because it felt like the original when Toula had too much stress to worry about. I will warn viewers, watch the first movie again before you see this movie because many of the jokes branch from the first movie. Co-starring Andrea Martin, Gia Carides, Joey Fatone, Alex Wolff, John Stamos, Louis Mandylor, Mark Margolis and Rita Wilson.
6/10 Stars – I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it. It adds more to a family we love and it definitely has some laughs. Just don’t expect a repeat of greatness.
