Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016)
Picking up 12 years after Edge of Reason, Bridget is alone and 43 years old. Her mother still pressures her to have kids and her friends want her to hook up with anyone she meets. When she goes off on vacation, she meets a handsome stranger named Jack (Patrick Dempsey) who she ends up sleeping with. A few days later at Daniel Cleaver’s funeral (yup, he’s dead), Bridget hooks up with none other than married, yet soon to be divorced, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). Fast forward 12 weeks, Bridget finds out she is pregnant and she has no idea which guy is the father – jealously ensues.
Bridget Jones’s Baby took everything we loved about the first movie, removed Hugh Grant (sad) and inserted Patrick Dempsey as the rival to Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy. We hardly notice that Renee Zellweger has a new face (kinda, but it is 12 years later) and everything feels right at home as Bridget is once again being fought over by 2 men. This is what made the first movie great! The adult humor and themes are still fresh and welcomed. Emma Thompson is a nice added flair to the mix (she wrote the script), but it is sad that Hugh Grant didn’t return. Speaking of, that is my only downside about this movie. Patrick Dempsey is basically Hugh Grant’s fill in. He does his best, but we all know this movie should have been about Darcy vs Cleaver round 2, but Hugh Grant didn’t like the story so he was out. Blah! Oh well, Dempsey does a nice job and (almost) helps us forget about Grant’s absence.
There isn’t much more I can say about this movie expect that this 3rd installment brings the fun and laughs back that I felt was missing from the 2nd movie. I can’t tell you which I liked more between this one and the first (they get the same rating) but I do hope that we get more… and I think we might! Co-starring Jim Broadbent, Emma Thompson, Shirley Henderson, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Gemma Jones, and Jessica Stevenson.
8/10 Stars – Funny, fresh, and witty, Bridget Jones’s Baby brings the franchise back in a big way!
