Vianne Rocher (Juliette Binoche) and her daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol) are wonderers. They follow the north wind from town to town and in 1960 they end up in a small sleepy town in France where Vianne opens a chocolate shop. Not everyone in the town is welcoming. The Mayor Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina) is a traditionalist and Vianne and her chocolate shop are disturbing the order of his little town so he does everything to encourage the town to shun her and her daughter. But that doesn’t deter Vianne who befriends and helps Josephine (Lena Olin) and also Armande Voizin (Judi Dench) her land lady who isn’t on terms with her daughter and grandson. Things get more interesting when Roux (Johnny Depp) and his “river rat” friends appear on the banks of the town. Also starring Peter Stormare, Carrie-Anne Mos, Leslie Caron, John Wood, Hugh O’Conor, Aurelien Parent Koenig.
Chocolat is a decadent story that will lull you into a happy sweet coma – and not out of boredom but from the chocolate it will entice you to eat while watching. There are various elements that make Chocolat so great, I will start with the story. The story is part fairy tale or fable and representation of quiet European life that many dream of. It’s all magical and charming. It sucks you in because you want the characters to loosen up a bit and enjoy themselves and the chocolate. Aside from the story the power of the film comes from its cast. Everyone plays their part perfectly and the bigger named stars add a punch. Judi Dench is great a the surly old land lady and Johnny Depp for once plays an almost normal role and is meant to be the sex appeal which you can’t deny him. All women need to watch this movie because you will love it. Men just leave your wife alone with the movie and box of chocolates.
9/10 Stars – Yummy goodness that is more tempting than you could possibly imagine!
