Cop Land (1997)
Cop Land is the story of Freddy (Sylvester Stallone), a naive and often disrespected sheriff of a New Jersey town that is populated with most of the cops of the NYPD. When one of the young cops (Michael Rapaport) controversially kills 2 unarmed thugs in a car (which he thought they were armed) he throws himself off a bridge rather than take the heat. The only problem is no one can find the body and many believe he is still alive since his uncle Ray (Harvey Keitel) is also on the force. Lead investigator from Internal Affairs (Robert De Niro) comes looking for Freddy’s help since all of the Cops live in his town and he is not sure if he can help with the investigation. Soon more people around the small community end up dead as they learn more about what exactly happened that night on the bridge.
Cop Land, in my opinion, is like the movie Goodfellas but with Cops rather than the mob. With powerful all-star cast, the movie can’t go wrong and lives up to the expectations. The drama is powerful and the suspense is gripping, which all lead to a wonderful climax that is right out of any Scorsese film, even though he didn’t work on this film. See this movie if you’re a fan of the genre. Co-starring Ray Liotta, Robert Patrick and Janeane Garofalo.
9/10 Stars – A very well put together film that has a great cast.
I saw this movie for the first time just a few weeks ago. Perhaps I wasn’t in the best mindset for it but I wasn’t as blown away as my movie crazed hubby. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t bad. It was a great movie, but I wouldn’t put it in my top 100. I found the idea of all the NYPD cops living in one town in Jersey, corrupt cops at that, a little unbelievable. Aside from that the story is good, the violence is disturbing. Lots of blood so squeamish need not apply 🙂 Definitely a must see but not a top of the line film.
8/10 Stars – Good movie, but the premise is a little unbelievable
