Directed by Kevin Smith (Mallrats, Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back), Dogma is a movie that basically pokes fun of everything in the Catholic Church and explains why things could actually be another way. God likes to come to Earth in human form to play Skee Ball, but when minions of the devil put that human in a coma, preventing God from just returning to Heaven, Bethany (Linda Fiorentino), the last scion, is sent on a mission from Metatron (Alan Rickman), the voice of God, to find God and pull the plug which would send him back to Heaven. She will be guided by 2 prophets Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) and the 13th Apostle Rufus (Chris Rock), whom we never heard about because he is black. Along the way the 4 of them run into 2 fallen angels named Bartleby and Loki (Matt Damon and Ben Affleck), a muse named Serendipity (Selma Hayek), and a demon named Azeral (Jason Lee). They find out that Cardnial Glick (George Carlin) is erecting an Arch that if Bartleby and Loki pass through the Arch, all their sins will be forgiven and they can return back in Heaven where they were cast out. If they manage to succeed in this giant loop-hole in Christian Dogma, it will show that God can be proved wrong and the world will collapse on itself! The race is on to find God and stop the 2 renegade angels!
Appearing on my personal top 100 list, Dogma is a well made and original satire about the Catholic religion. Kevin Smith was raised Catholic and this is his big “what if.” Being raised Catholic myself, I find this movie freaking hilarious because of the way Kevin Smith twists the views of Catholics and makes them incontestable. Smith doesn’t expect you to believe what is in the movie, but to laugh and take it light-heartedly. The all-star cast is one that helps add to the quality of the picture that has big names along side names that are only well known in the Kevin Smith Universe. If you have a sense of humor when it comes to your beliefs, then check out Dogma!
9/10 Stars – Funny, controversial, and it has Jay and Silent Bob!
