His Review:
Enemy of the State is the story of Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith), a high power lawyer who, while shopping for lingerie for his wife, receives classified information into the murder of a Senator without knowing. After an old friend drops a video into his shopping bags, his life gets turned upside down and is constantly on the run from men who want to kill him. The only person on his side is the woman who he had an affair years ago which makes things at home even more stressed. When she ends up dead as well, her business contact Brill (Gene Hackman) is the only man who can get him out of the mess he is in.
The actors in the movie might not have been huge names at the time this movie was made, but at every turn there is a new famous face. Jack Black, Jamie Kennedy, Seth Green, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Jason Lee, Regina King, Scott Caan, Jake Busey, Barry Pepper, Lisa Bonet and Gabriel Byrne are all successful Hollywood stars that accompany Will Smith and Gene Hackman. Sometimes this doesn’t equal a quality movie but Enemy of the State is fast, suspenseful and thrilling. It might not be on the list of most memorable of Will Smith’s movies, but it sure is one of his most entertaining. Plus Gene Hackman gives a good performance being in half the movie.
8/10 Stars – Might not be intellectual, but it sure is a fun ride.
