Escape Plan (2013)

Her Review:

Ray Breslin (Sylvester Stallone) breaks out of prisons for a living.  He is the world’s foremost authority on prison security.  He literally wrote the book on it.  Breslin’s next job is going to test even his astounding abilities.  The prison is a privately funded, top-secret, high-tech facility known as “The Tomb.”  From the start of the job things don’t go according to the guidelines.  This time Breslin is in prison to stay because someone wants him there.  So he teams up with fellow Tomb inmate Emil Rottmayer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and together they plan their escape.  Also starring Jim Caviezel, Faran Tahir, Amy Ryan, Sam Neill, Vincent D’Onofrio, Vinnie Jones, Matt Gerald, 50 Cent, Caitriona Balfe.

Escape Plan doesn’t make you want to escape the theater but it doesn’t encourage you stay either.  The premise for Escape Plan seemed a fun one.  Guy has to break out of the world’s most secure prison…interesting.  Turns out not really as interesting as I hoped.  I still think this film had the bones to be an intellectual action junkie film it just didn’t use them.  The movie moves way too slow after the first breakout scene at the beginning.  After that you pretty much know where things are going so why does it take so long to get there?  I was yawning most of the way through the second half.  I will say there is a little twist that I didn’t pick up on but it is insignificant and doesn’t add much to the film after the fact.  A big disappointment was how early on they reveal who is “keeping” Breslin in the prison.  Took away all the suspense and they reveal it in such a casual way that it doesn’t draw anything from you as an audience.

Now while most critics are dogging on the performances of Stallone and Schwarzenegger I think Schwarzenegger was actually pretty good.  He adds a slight comedic element to an otherwise dull part of the film.  Now Stallone is Stallone.  Seriously does that man have any other face?  He is great for movies like this because when he has to lie to other people you believe him because his face doesn’t move a muscle, it is always the same!  When it’s all said and done Escape Plan isn’t a bad movie but it doesn’t live up to the action expectations set by the story and the lead actors.

6/10 Stars – “Ho hum” for the most part but it was nice to see Schwarzenegger doing is thing again as best he can at his age!

His Review:

Escape Plan might not be Ocean’s 11 with a large cast and an elaborate plot to seek revenge on the villain, but it sure is enjoyable to watch and has subtle bits of comedy throughout.  The movie is broken up into 2 parts, the first 15 minutes where we learn what Sly’s character does, and then the rest where we get to see these skills put into action.  As a fan of action films (especially by these 2 guys), I’m torn as to whether this movie was done the best way.  On one hand, the movie is straight forward and shows us how these 2 guys plan to break out of a prison that is deemed inescapable while on the other hand it is rather dry with not as many thrills and action as it would have liked to see.  I mentioned Ocean’s 11 above because it’s a movie that incorporates both.  Elaborating more on the movie, I wish the story could have had a little more surprises and twists to keep the story fresh.  I felt like we were just watching 2 guys figure out a puzzle with little to no resistance, not to mention, the whole “outside world” story was a waste.  It should have been either nonexistent or integrated deeper for us to invest in these characters.  Usually when a movie has plenty of action than we don’t care about development, but if the film isn’t going to have as much violence as the Expendables, than it needs the extra fluff elsewhere.  It might sound like I didn’t enjoy this film, but that’s not true at all.  Escape Plan kept me watching because I wanted to figure out how they were going to get out and because Sly and Arnold are front and center.  If it weren’t for these guys that Escape plan may have went right to DVD, but they keep it interested.  I would recommend this be a viewing maybe for rent, but it’s not a waste of time by any means… just not top-notch from these guys.

7/10 Stars – Entertaining and keeps you watching, but could have been flashier and more fun!
