Her Review:

After an explosion on their moon the Klingons have only 50 years before their planet is inhabitable. Their only choice is to make peace with the Federation to have access to their scientific knowledge that might save their planet and people from certain death. The only problem is the two factions have been at war for 70 years. With Spock and his father being the masterminds behind a negotiated peace with the Klingons, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) recruits James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and crew for one last mission. The Enterprise will serve as envoy to the Klingon ambassador as he travels to the peace conference. But nothing is simple about peace. There are those who are for it and those who are can’t stand the thought because they have known nothing but war. Before The Enterprise can deliver its precious cargo, disaster hits and Kirk and McCoy (DeForest Kelley) are held responsible for a crime they didn’t commit. Can Spock save his long time friend? And will the Federation and the Klingons finally end the seven decade long war? Also starring James Doohan, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Kim Cattrall, Mark Lenard, Grace Lee Whitney, Brock Peters, Leon Russom, Kurtwood Smith, Christopher Plummer, Rosanna DeSoto, David Warner, John Schuck, Michael Dorn.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country wraps up one saga with a neat bow while leaving it open for the next generation – pun intended. This film, like the others, employs the classic Star Trek elements, effects and characters; everything a fan would expect. The story is there as well, again everything you would expect. This is both good and bad. Good because if ain’t broke don’t fix it. The formula has worked for so many years and still continues to entertain. However, without anything new there is no where for the franchise to grow and the regular movie goer might not appreciate all of this as much as the fan. I think one of my favorite aspects is when Spock takes over as Captain while Kirk has been imprisoned for his “crime.” Spock is ruthless, cunning and of course logical. Just one word – awesome! The appearance of Kim Cattrall was odd. As a fan of Sex and the City, she seemed out-of-place in a Star Trek movie. She does however do a decent job as a Vulcan no matter how strange I think it is. There aren’t too many female Trekkies who are also Sex and the City fans so I don’t see that as a major issue. All in all this film is definitely a must see for Trekkies and I highly recommend it for average movie goer because there is all the trappings of an entertaining film.

8/10 Stars – Sad to see the series end but they go out in the right way making peace instead of war!

His Review:

Nicknamed “The Iceman” due to how he disposed of his victims, Richard Kuklinski (Michael Shannon), who was a hired mafia contract killer, claims he killed approximately 100 people from the 1950s to his capture in 1986. Kuklinski lived a double life. His wife Deborah (Winona Ryder), his friends, and his 2 daughters had no idea that he was a gun-for-hire. They didn’t know his true profession until after he was arrested. This movie is the tale of Richard Kuklinski’s life as detailed by himself in many different interviews from his own prison cell. As a movie, this is what we were all hoping for when we wasted our time with Killing Them Softly. It is a perfect blend of reality, mafia activity, raw violence, emotion, thrills, chills and just plain death. Michael Shannon’s performance is haunting, shocking and chilling and one not to miss! It’s hard to imagine the raw savage nature of this man who had 2 faces, but it goes to show what kind of monster an abusive childhood can materialize. Some people may find the movie stale and boring at times, but the true nature of the story kept me watching and there are plenty of scenes that will get your heart racing. I actually applaud this kind of movie for staying “plain” and not going “Hollywood” even though it has plenty of famous faces (Ray Liotta, David Schwimmer, James Franco, Stephen Dorff). Thumbs up from me!

8/10 Stars – Raw, chilling and haunting – Michael Shannon shines in his portrayal of one seriously messed up serial killer.

Her Review (A Trekkie):

After completing a mission to observe a developing race on a foreign planet, The Enterprise and her crew have returned home to Earth. However, Kirk’s (Chris Pine) handling of certain aspects of the mission to observe have called into question his ability to command a starship. But there are bigger concerns within the Federation than Kirk’s rank. Someone is attacking Starfleet at its very core, leaving Earth in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk and crew set out on a man-hunt that will take them to the very heart of the Klingon empire and the Klingons aren’t exactly on friendly terms with Starfleet right now. As the brave crew faces certain death, everything they believe in and live for will be called into question, and great sacrifices must be made by Kirk to save his family – his crew. Also starring Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Benedict Chumberbatch, Anton Yelchin, Bruce Greenwood, Peter Weller, Alice Eve, Noel Clarke, Nazneen Contractor, Leonard Nimoy.

Star Trek Into Darkness melds the familiar with the new in a seamless action packed film that won’t disappoint, be you Trekkie or not. I gave 2009′s Star Trek a 10, so while I had high hopes this one would be just as good I didn’t go in with that expectation. I was not disappointed. There is so much to love about this film, a lot of which I won’t write because it would be major spoilers. Let’s start with the non-trekkie elements. The story of Into Darkness is fast paced and robust. Not to mention it is fully developed from start to finish but leaves you with a nice ending that hints to the future of the Star Trek franchise. If the franchise continues with the power house films it has created thus far a third one can’t go wrong. Unlike the original Star Trek movies the action scenes here are jaw dropping at times and mind-boggling at others. Action junkie be ware you just might get addicted. I would expect nothing less however from J.J. Abrams. If I had anything to complain about it would be that the quick pace that Abrams sets from the start jolts you a bit at times and you wish you had a just a moment longer on a few scenes to comprehend what just happened and who it happened to. However, any average movie goer looking for an entertaining and enthralling film will not be disappointed. One of the stand out elements is our villain, John Harrison. A seemingly harmless human he is anything but and wrecks great havoc that The Enterprise crew is destined to overcome in some extraordinary fashion just like in the original series and movies. That brings me neatly to the Star Trek elements that you will only truly appreciate if you are a fan. I can’t give to many details or risk major spoilers but if you have seen the original Star Trek films particularly the second one you will notice some not so subtle references. But for me the best part about this young crew is their ability to channel the original characters flawlessly. Bones and Spock are frenemies and their banter will make you giggle. Kirk and Spock are slowly learning to understand each other, Scotty is his typical smart ass self and you are witness to it all. As a fan of the series it adds a deeper level to the film than the everyday movie goer will experience, and is part of the reason I rate this film so high. The ability for Star Trek Into Darkness to stay true to the franchise while at the same time breathing new life into it and developing strong cast and stories is nothing short of impressive.

10/10 Stars – Call me a Trekkie but the combination of masterful action scenes and sly nods to the original Star Trek make this one I will watch anywhere, anytime.

His Review (a non-Trekkie):

For those of you that don’t know, I am not a Trekkie. I have not seen any of the Star Trek shows or movies except the first movie in this series that came out in 2009. I don’t know why, but the show just never appealed to me, but I’m beginning to think that it would be something I’d enjoy. After re-watching the 2009 Star Trek movie starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, I saw what J.J. Abrams was able to create with plenty of source material and really enjoyed the introduction. I can’t say I was super excited about the release of Star Trek Into Darkness, but it is one of the few films I looked forward to in 2013 and I can say that it got bigger and better (kinda like all the other Superhero/comic book movies). Since the first installment took care of character development, basic ideas and setting, Star Trek Into Darkness got right into things with plenty of action sequences, a strong story that is both emotional and humorous, new characters (especially Alice Eve), and one sinister bad guy. In the movie world, 2 things make a great bad guy – either they are likable to the point you can’t get enough of them (Alan Rickman in Die Hard) or so reserved they seem dead inside (T-1000 in Terminator 2). I can say that the bad guy in this movie is the latter and does a great job as being truly sinister. With an equal balance of character involvement, I think Star Trek Into Darkness is a great blend of action and emotion that highlights both victory and sacrifice. It takes what was introduced in the first film and elevates it. A must see and highlight so far in 2013!

9/10 Stars – I might not be a Trekkie, but I know a great action movie when I see one!

Her Review:

The Enterprise has had a big overhaul and been christened The Enterprise – A. All the new technology isn’t quite up to snuff so the crew is on shore leave while the ship is in Spacedock for repairs. The crew doesn’t get to enjoy their down time long though before an urgent mission is handed to them. A renegade Vulcan, Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill) – who just happens to be Spock’s (Leonard Nimoy) half-brother, has taken hostages on the peace planet of Nimbus III in the neutral zone. No only is The Enterprise sent to rescue the hostages but the Klingons head that way as well and they aren’t there to help. As Kirk (William Shatner) and crew attempt a rescue, Sybok takes them and their ship hostage in order to continue his search for God (George Murdock). Surviving the journey through the Great Barrier they discover a being but it isn’t God and he doesn’t intend to let them leave unharmed. Also starring DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, David Warner, Charles Cooper, Cynthia Gous, Tood Bryant, Spice Williams-Crosby, Rex Holman.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier takes on the age old question of does God exist but certainly doesn’t answer it or provide an interesting ride getting to their answer. After strong and entertaining showings with Star Trek II, II and IV this one is a sad let down. The best parts of the movie don’t even take place in space. The only upside is the quirky dialogue between Spock and Kirk that is sure to entertain. Aside from those elements everything else is a let down. The special effects aren’t up to snuff for a movie made in 1989, although they certainly gave it their all with the floating god head. The story isn’t anything exciting or new and the part of it that would of interest to the fans, Spock having a half-brother, is brushed over and then forgotten. Just overall this film was a disappoint on too many levels for any of the positive qualities to save it.

6/10 Stars – Lack of originality can’t be saved by a small amount of witty dialogue.

Her Review:

After defying orders to search for the body of Spock and bring him home, Jame T. Kirk (William Shatner) and crew are finally returning home to Earth and Starfleet headquarters in their captured Klingon ship. But it isn’t a joyful return as they go to face punishment for what they did. At the same time as they are making their journey home a probe appears headed for earth. When it arrives it directs communication at the planet’s oceans that no one can seem to decipher, except Spock (Leonard Nimoy). Spock discovers that the language of the probe is one of the Humpback Whale, long extinct from Earth’s oceans. The probe’s form of communication is wrecking havoc on the planet surface and the systems of all ships and space stations. Destruction is imminent. Kirk and team must do the unthinkable, attempt a time warp back to 20th century Earth to find some Humpback Whales t and bring them to the 23rd century and reply to the probe to save Earth and everyone on it from certain death. Also starring DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Jane Wyatt, Catherine Hicks, Mark Lenard, Robin Curtis, Robert Ellenstein, John Schuck, Brock Peters.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home brings Star Trek home to the current century (at the time) for a story that will feel more familiar than Sci-fi but it is that which makes it appeal more to the masses. The Voyage Home is quirky and fun. It doesn’t take itself seriously like the previous three films did. The time travel and inclusion of Humpback Whales in the plot make this easily the most absurd of all the Star Trek films – yet oddly it is the funniest and most relatable. I can’t say I love that about it, but I don’t hate it either. Perhaps having been raised on Star Trek: The Next Generation and seen these types of plots before it lost some of its charm on me because at the time it was the first. Directed again by Nimoy, the cast does appear at the best so there is something to be said for that. The special effects are more prominent when side by side with a view of the modern-day world. However, there aren’t many special effects as the plot doesn’t lend itself to cool space battles and images of new or alien star ships. I will say the film certainly takes the Star Trek motto to heart, “Boldly go where no man has gone before.” This film boldly goes where no Star Trek film has gone before.

7/10 Stars – Not my favorite of the VI movies, just a bit to “close to home” for a Sci-Fi film for my taste.

Her Review:

The Enterprise is damaged and decommissioned Spock is dead and The Enterprise crew is scattered. Plus McCoy (DeForest Kelley) is acting strangely and no one knows why. Things aren’t exactly going the way Kirk (William Shatner) envisioned. To make matters worse Ambassador Sarek (Mark Lenard), Spock’s father is amazed at Kirk for not brining his son’s body home to Vulcan. Sarek explains to Kirk that he should have returned the body along with Spock’s soul or Katra for final rights. Sarek expected Kirk to have the katra but McCoy holds it instead which explains his odd behavior and his urge to return to Genesis where Spock’s body is. Kirk must now break every rule and command to seek out Spock’s body so he can return it and the Katra inside McCoy to Vulcan. But nothing about this mission is simple. Aside from defying direct orders, Kirk and those loyal crew members must battle some rogue Klingons who seek Genesis as a weapon and have destroyed a Federation science ship and are holding, a regenerated Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Lieutenant Savvik (Robin Curtis) and Kirk’s son David (Merritt Butrick) hostage. Kirk’s loyalty to his friend Spock will be tested…to the death. Also starring Walter Koenig, James Doohan, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, Phil Morris, Scott McGinnis, Robert Hooks, Christopher Lloyd, Stephen Liska, John Larroquette.

Like the Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is full of purpose, action and adventure and a true Star Trek essence that will have any fan excited. Non-trekkies will enjoy it too! One of the greatest things about this film is it continues with a display of humanity that is filled with purpose and breathes life into the story and the genre. Directed by Star Trek’s own Leonard Nimoy the film is adept at melding sci-fi elements with emotional ones. Thus giving it an appeal to the non-fans of the series. I was intrigued by the casting of Christopher Lloyd as a blood thirsty Klingon, didn’t seem to fit. I think there could have been better choices for his role but then I am sure they had their reasons for casting him. Perhaps to draw the non-trekkie crowd but then Lloyd didn’t hit real fame till 1985 when Back to the Future was released. All in all the third of the movie series manages to keep the ball rolling rather than stopping it cold like so many sequels tend to do.

8/10 Stars – An essential film to rescue Spock from the dead which surely you must do or else the Star Trek fans might have killed those responsible for killing the character on screen!

Her Review:

Time is starting to catch up with Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) who spends his time these days on The Enterprise except now it is being used as a Starfleet Academy training ship. As Kirk and the trainees set out for a two week training cruise an incident occurs and they are the only ship within range. This time the enemy is an old foe, Khan Noonien Singh (Ricard Montalban). Khan is a genetic conqueror from late 20th century earth who Kirk exiled on a planet years before. When some scientists and some old familiar Enterprise crew members investigate a supposedly deserted planet as a test for Project Genesis they stumble about Khan. Khan of course seizes the opportunity to exact revenge on Kirk and Starfleet by taking over the science ship and station, capturing Project Genesis and killing anyone who gets in his way. Once again it is up to Kirk to stare certain death in the face and come out with his life intact and that of his friends and crew. Also starring Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, Bibi Besch, Merrit Butrick, Paul Winfield, Kirstie Alley.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is exactly what the Star Trek fan has come to expect from the genre and lives up to general audience expectations with a vicious nemesis, lots of action and a strong story to boot. Like most fans, I wish this film had been the first to come of all the movies. The expected action is abundant, something missing from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. There is no slow point here. And with the action you also get the human side, with Kirk dealing with his aging in contrast to Genesis which represents the birth of new life. A subtle but well used contrast in the film. Plus another element that you will either love or hate is the death of a significant character…won’t spoil it but it is pretty unbelievable. Now again age shows here where the effects and certain elements appear a bit campy at times but they aren’t a distraction and nor are they campy to the point of funny. While I do feel the character of Khan could have been a bit more imposing in nature he does intimidate and proves a greater threat than the artificial intelligence from the first movie. All in all this is the better of the original Star Trek films and is a must see for any Trekkie.

8/10 Stars – Perhaps doesn’t “boldly go” where no film has gone before but it does what it sets out to do and has plenty of thought-provoking moments to balance out the action.

Her Review:

A large unidentifiable object that has unprecedented size and technology is on a direct trajectory for earth. It is destroying everything in its path and no one can seem to communicate with it. As people begin to panic, Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) has requested and been granted control of his long time ship, The Enterprise. Its new Captain, Willard Decker is none too happy about it either. But Earth has the best chance for survival with Kirk in the captain’s chair of the Enterprise. With the help of his long time crew Kirk attempts to communicate with the unknown object and discover exactly why it is headed for earth. Also starring Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Majel Barrett, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, Persis Khambatta, Stephen Collins, Grace Lee Whitney, Mark Lenard.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture marks the return of The Enterprise and her famous crew 10 years after the end of the of the long running TV show. Star Trek, a cherished and renowned franchise doesn’t perhaps do it itself justice with this first film. Honestly I don’t think you get the most bang for your buck on this one. Movies like this are often just extended TV episodes and this film is no different except that it isn’t a very exciting episode. Sure you save the earth from certain destruction but its done in such a plotting manner that you long for shortness of the hour-long TV show format. Don’t mistake me, I am a major Trekkie; and I can appreciate that this film is an old one at the time I am writing this but that doesn’t mean I should give it any leeway. You expect forward thinking from Star Trek and instead the story here seems backwards. The crew is amazed at its own technology and abilities when it is us who should be sitting in awe of it not them. Now I will say that the special effects for the time are impressive. Plus the remastered version of this moving is shockingly realistic making it even more awe-inspiring from that stand point. Any Trekkie can appreciate the monumental nature of the movie but most would agree I think that the story was a bit of a let down after a long running TV show. You just expect more to be blunt.

7/10 Stars – Disappointed in the story but can’t help but worship the effects for the time and of course there is the Trekkie factor to consider! May Star Trek always “Live long and prosper!”

His Review:

Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is a young woman who is an elementary school teacher. Kate and her husband Charlie (Aaron Paul) live a carefree lifestyle with plenty of music, parties and alcohol. When Kate goes to work hung over one day, she fabricates a pregnancy to explain her physical state, but a co-worker (Nick Offerman) finds out she is really an alcoholic and takes her to AA meetings. Kate begins to get her life back on track, but the life she once knew isn’t happy with her new change.

Smashed is a short drama that sounds exactly as it is. It is about a woman who tries to let go of alcohol and has a difficult time doing so. As far as a well put together story, it succeeds with good acting and plenty of real life situations, but as a movie designed to entertain, Smashed does little in that department. Also, Smashed does little in the area of giving us anything memorable to hold on to. It’s simple, short and something that will be forgotten. It’s hard to say this movie was “bad” but it’s also hard for me to recommend it to anyone.

5/10 Stars – Simple, dramatic and forgettable.

Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) is a would be writer and the narrator for the story of one Mr. Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). The time is 1922, the height of jazz, bootleg liquor, wealth and loose morals. Nick like everyone hopes to make his fortune and travels to the heart of it all, New York City. Renting a small cottage in the West Egg outside the city, he finds himself next to a castle of sorts, the home of one Mr. Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is a mysterious millionaire who throws elaborate parties. Rumors abound about who he is, where he came from and how he came about so much money. And across the water, in the East Egg, lies the home of Daisy (Carey Mulligan) and Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). Daisy is a 2nd cousin to Nick. Thus Nick is drawn into two captivating worlds where he plays keeper to more than a few secrets. More importantly he plays witness to the tumultuous and tragic story of The Great Gatsby. Also starring Elizabeth Debicki, Amitabh Bachchan, Steve Bisley, Jason Clarke, Adelaide Clemens, Isla Fisher, Eden Falk, Vince Colosimo, Richard Carter, Stephen James King, David Furlong, Daniel Gill, Callan McAuliffe.

Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby is a lush yet smash and grab movie that feels like the morning after you drank too much and you aren’t quite sure what happened. The Great Gatsby has been made several times before so there is nothing new in terms of plot or characters. The retelling of the story comes from how it is “displayed” if you will. First of all if you haven’t read the book then you should. Before you see the movie. While there isn’t much to leave out from a not even 200 page novel, the film some how does still manage to disperse with subplots that give you a better understanding of your narrator. However, the aim for this rendition was to focus on Gatsby which it does with blinders on. Not to its detriment because DiCaprio offers up a splendid performance. He is perfectly cast and I couldn’t imagine anyone else in the role. Mulligan also seems a perfect fit for her role as Daisy. As if she was plucked directly from that time period and Fitzgerald’s mind’s eye.

Like the time period it represents the film rushes constantly, breezing you through characters, story etc. That is until the end where it finally stops to take a breath. However, by then you feel a bit woozy and off-balance as if you had spent all night drinking and partying at one of Gatsby’s notorious blow outs. The thing about all this is though, it seems intentional. As if Baz Luhrmann wanted exactly that. So I can appreciate the achievement of such an aim but can’t say I enjoyed every aspect of the ride. I mean who likes having a hangover after all? Like when I read the book in the movie I was dazzled by the surroundings, costumes, music and displays of frivolity but not the story. The story leaves you feeling depressed and hopeless. Sorry Fitzgerald! Maybe I missed the point. That depression and hopelessness is prevalent at the end of the film so at least they got that right so I can’t complain even if I don’t like the end. Like most women I am a sucker for happy endings but that can’t be for every story told so this isn’t so much a negative on the film as it is a personal preference. Overall, I was impressed by everything that you should be impressed by and enjoyed my time at the party even if I came out of it wondering how I ended up there in the first place.

8/10 Stars – Depressing yet beautiful, it is an odd combination of dream like sequences that make you feel as if you, like the characters, may have had a bit too much to drink.

His Review:

After seeing The Great Gatsby, I have plenty of mixed feelings. It’s actually difficult for me to say if I liked or didn’t like this movie because it has plenty of ups and downs. Sadly, the movie starts off on a down because for the first 45 minutes I didn’t have a clue where the movie was going. With visions of the city of Rapture from the popular video game BioShock, the roaring 20s (full of music featured from the likes of Jay Z and Beyoncé… why???) is shown as one giant party. Once Jay Gatsby is introduced, the story picks up and the love triangles show their ugly heads. As we all can see, The Great Gatsby has tragedy written all over it. However, I feel that it could have been told a lot faster. This movie is 2.5 hours and drags often. At times I said to myself “Tobey Maguire must have been bored on the set with all the standing around he is doing.” Seriously, the guy just stands around most of the scenes “watching” what is going on since he is the narrator. I can say that Leonardo DiCaprio did a great job as Gatsby (as he does in most his movies) but I have a hard time saying this unique and odd film is something that everyone should see. If you are into art, costumes, the 1920s or tragic affair stories, than see this movie, otherwise wait for video.

6/10 Stars – Way too many head-scratching moments that drag out. The 2nd half of the movie is when it is decently enjoyable.
