Forrest Gump (1994)
Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) is a simple man with a low IQ but a good heart. Despite is low IQ he has led somewhat of a charmed life, under the motto “Stupid is as Stupid does” and “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.” Gump is more worldly than he appears at first sight. He has fought in Vietnam, won medals for running, created a famous shrimp fishing fleet, started a ping-pong craze and met the president more than once. But to Forrest none of this means anything because all he can think about is his childhood friend and love Jenny. Jenny hasn’t had a good life like Forrest however, it has been troubled and hard. For Forrest it is only ever about proving that anyone can love and anyone can succeed no matter what. Also starring Sally Field and Robin Wright.
Forrest Gump brings to mind the phrase “its the simple things in life” and this movie is definitely one of those simple pleasures that you can’t miss. At #76 on the AFI Top 100 list the whole film is charming, heart-warming and truly moving. Tom Hanks gives the performance of a lifetime here that was award-winning, unexpected and unforgettable. With all its charm and sweetness Forrest Gump is far from a perfect movie. Like the character Forrest the movie is simple but far too much at times but that doesn’t hinder the entertainment value it provides. Although don’t expect a typical entertainment, this is the type of entertainment that for women always requires a tissue.
9/10 Stars – Forrest Gump will cast a spell on you…if you have a heart that is because that is everything it is full of.
I remember Forrest Gump being one of the first true “grown up” films I ever saw. Tom Hanks is wonderful in his role as Forrest and there is no surprise that he won the Oscar for best actor in 1994. The film is one that tells a great story. It tells a story of sadness, triumph, success, love, and heartbreak. It takes into account many of the things people had to deal with in their own lives over the last 30 years of the 20th century. That is why people have a great connection to the movie and love it so much. It might be dry at times, and one that everyone makes fun of, because Forrest gets picked on, but it is one that people will always say is a “good movie.” Forrest Gump has been a popular movie over the last almost 20 years, so most of you have probably see it, but if you haven’t, do yourself a cinematic favor.
8/10 Stars – Touching, moving and heartfelt… Tom Hanks creates a movie icon that will not be soon forgotten.
