Goldeneye is a secret and deadly satellite weapon system that has fallen into the wrong hands, namely that of some rogue Russians and supposedly dead British agent 006 (Sean Bean). It is up to James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) to discover what they plan to do with the weapon and of course stop them. This mission is a bit trickier though because he is dealing with one of his own who knows Bond’s moves but then Bond was never good at being predictable. Also starring Izabella Scorupco, Famke Janssen, Joe Don Baker, Judi Dench, Robbie Coltrane, Gottfried John, Alan Cumming, Desmond Llewelyn, Samantha Bond.
I tend to disagree with the majority of critics in that GoldenEye is definitely in the mediocre group of Bond films. I don’t mind the appearance of Pierce Brosnan as Bond its all the little things that bug me. The tacky late 80s like sound track, the revamp of the Bond theme song, the over the top corny jokes that Brosnan can’t really pull off and the casting of a few of the other main characters. All this, especially the music, just gives it an awkward vibe. The action is GoldenEye’s only redeeming quality. As I watched this, knowing I had seen it before, the only thing I could actually remember about the film was the chase seen with Bond in a tank. All this considered you can’t deny that this particular film did breath new life into the franchise because of its Hollywood moments and recasting with a well known star.
7/10 Stars – Props for the car/tank chase and smashing a bullet train with a tank but I was kinda bored with the rest.
