Goodfellas is the true story, as taken from the book Wiseguys, of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta). Henry always knew he wanted to be a gangster since he was little and was able to get his foot in the door as a young boy under the guidance of Paulie Cicero (Paul Sorvino). He quit school and decided a life of organized crime was the life for him. Along the way he met and worked with James Conway (Robert De Niro) and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) and they lived the life of luxury with plenty of drugs, girls and money. Problems always came with the territory whether it was an angry wife, someone wanting them dead or the cops on their tail, Henry seemed to be able to handle most situation, that is until the FBI came calling and wanted him to rat on his mob family.
Directed by Martin Scorsese (The Departed, Hugo, Shutter Island), Goodfellas comes in at #92 on the AFI Top 100 list and is one of the more enjoyable films on the list. Goodfellas was nominated for 6 Academy Awards, including best picture and director, and took home the Oscar for Joe Pesci’s performance. I have found that I typically enjoy Scorsese films and Goodfellas is probably the easiest 2.5 hour movie to watch about gangsters. The acting, story telling and flow of the movie goes smoothly and even though it’s a true story, Goodfellas never is boring. The casting is superb as every italian actor in Hollywood seems to be in this movie and again shows that De Niro/Scorsese are a great pair. It’s no surprise that a movie on the AFI list made in the 90s is one I favor more than others, but it entertains without a doubt.
8/10 Stars – From the opening line, it had me hooked.
Goodfellas is a classic gangster movie. It has all the excitement you expect with a well told story to boot. You can see the Scorsese touch throughout which like all his other films makes it stand out from everything else out there in the movie world. Now girls beware, this is a gangster film so its go plenty of booze, sex, and of course murder. Not exactly what most female movie goers out there want to see. But that being said I think everyone, male or female should see Goodfellas at some point because it is a great film that will I think always be a top 100 film.
8/10 Stars – Let’s go gangster baby!
