In 1944, a group of Nazis lead, by Grigori Rasputin (Karel Roden), open a portal to another world, allowing a young red demon to pass through. When the operation is stopped by US military, “Hellboy” is taken and raised by Professor Broom to fight good rather than evil. 60 years later in present time, Rasputin has returned and unleashed powerful demons on the human race. Hellboy, along with Liz (Selma Blair), Hellboy’s ex who can create fire, and Abe (David Hyde Pierce), who is an underwater humanoid with powers of telepathy, are sent to stop Rasputin and his “pets.”
Directed by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Mimic, Blade 2), Hellboy is a dark yet action-packed comic book adaptation with plenty of great special effects. As expected, red is the predominant vivid color in Hellboy and, unlike other comic book movies, it is rated R for strong violence. Ron Pearlman is great as the sarcastic, hard-headed, stubborn, gun-welding demon and cast perfectly. I’ve never been a big fan of Selma Blair and she is the only thing that brings the movie down for me, but that is pulling at straws. Hellboy is a new look at action heroes and he gives us someone new to cheer for. Co-starring Jeffrey Tambor and Rupert Evans.
8/10 Stars – Great story with plenty of action and a fun performance from Ron Pearlman.
