Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
20 years after the events of the first movie, Will Smith is dead and the aliens are back! Humans took what they learned from the aliens and boosted their technology in preparation for another attack, but the aliens have also become stronger. Facing yet another possible destruction of Earth, the humans must find a way to destroy the alien queen before they destroy the planet from the inside out.
Where do I begin…
First of all, I will start out by saying that Independence Day Resurgence isn’t a horrible movie and I never got the urge to walk out of the theater, but this movie sure has PLENTY wrong with it and it’s quite obvious.
I’m not quite sure why after 20 years this movie came out. Were they looking for a cash grab? Was this movie in purgatory for that long? Did they finally get a script they liked? Was there even a demand for it? Why 20 years? Because 20 years has gone by, the actors are not the favorites of Hollywood anymore to the point that Will Smith didn’t even return. The old actors feel out of place and forced while the new ones feel like something out of The Maze Runner or The Hunger Games. The mesh of the characters and actors feel disconnected and the comedic relief is awkward. I’m sure this is because Will Smith did not return and nothing was going to save that departure.
Something else very wrong with this movie is the lack of passion or emotion. Several people die in this movie and sometimes it happens so fast that you need to turn to the person sitting next to you and say “did that person just die because I couldn’t tell?” There are simply no memorable scenes or events that invoke excitement. That is what made the first movie so loved. The White House blowing up, the President’s Independence Day speech, and the 2 heroes smoking cigars at the end are all icon moments that are remembered when you think of Independence Day and this movie has none of that.
The real downfall of this movie is the story. ******SPOILERS AHEAD****** I was ok with the aliens returning bigger and badder. It makes sense and probably logical. What I hated was how the aliens stopped everything they were doing the moment their queen died. I mean they are seconds away from cracking into the Earth’s mantle and they just stop, pack up, and leave? Really?!? Another thing I hated with the story is the WALL-E aspect. Seriously, a sphere that looks like EVE comes to Earth with all the secrets of the universe and how to kill the aliens. Yup, that’s right! Stupid! Oh, and did I mention that is why the aliens are back? It is because they want this sphere. I’m shaking my head in disappointment.
It might seem like I hated this movie, and that isn’t the case. I do not believe this movie needed to be made and it offers nothing to the legacy of the first movie. In fact, it might even tarnish the first like The Matrix sequels did. It does have some decent special effects but for me they were too much to wrap my head around. At the end of the day, this movie will entertain younger audiences, but for people who love and know how iconic the first movie is, this will be a HUGE disappointment. Starring Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth, Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner, Deobia Oparei, Jesse T. Usher, Judd Hirsch, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward, Vivica A. Fox and William Fichtner.
5/10 Stars – If I didn’t have the first movie to compare, this was a decent attempt at an alien invasion, but it tarnishes the legacy that is ID4!
