Lethal Weapon 4 (1998)
Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) is going to be a father with his girlfriend Lorna (Rene Russo) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) is going to be a grandfather. Roger isn’t too happy that is daughter Rianne (Traci Wolfe) is pregnant without being married, but what he doesn’t know is she is, and to a cop! Detective Lee Butters (Chris Rock) tries to get in Roger’s good graces but he only succeeds in getting Roger to think he is gay for him! As for the police work, this time around our duo must track down a group of men from Hong Kong making counterfeit money to “buy back” 4 major crime lords, and in the process help some innocence people who are working as slave labor. Leo Getz (Joe Pesci) makes a return and this time he is a Private Eye, but is just as annoying as usual but helps Martin with an important choice in his life.
It’s funny, based on the time Lethal Weapon 4 hit theatres, it was the first movie I saw from the series, so you can imagine I was a little lost the first time, but loved the charm, action and great cast! With the addition of Chris Rock, and Joe Pesci and Rene Russo returning, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover no long had to carry a franchise that was beginning to show signs of “being too old of this shit.” The fact that they even incorporated that into the film is genius. It tells the audience that these guys can’t do this forever and they know it. The story again isn’t anything to be all that excited about, however, the added sentimental moments is a nice contrast from all the action we are use to, and Jet Li (before he was well-known) is a nice addition as well. Along with the first film, Lethal Weapon 4 makes my personal Top 100 list for the sheer nature of it being the film that sucked me into the franchise and has the best cast. Great way to end it!
10/10 Stars – Perfect blend of everything that was great about this series!
