London Has Fallen (2016)
When all the world leaders gather in London for the funeral of the Prime Minister, Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) is once again in charge of keeping President Asher (Aaron Eckhart) alive. In what is a sequel to Olympus Has Fallen, the same characters return for a stint in London where terrorists want to kill all the world leaders attending a funeral. The main focus is on the President of the United States who the terrorists want to capture and execute live on the web.
In what feels like 25% of a season of 24 meets The Purge, Mike and the President run around the streets of London trying to avoid capture while killing anything in sight. London has Fallen is 100% an action flick from beginning to end. Unlike the first movie that adds a good bit of drama into the mix, this movie is 99 minutes of cookie-cutter action and that makes it a rather pointless movie. I have no idea why this movie needed to be made, but this sequel took the heart of the first movie and stripped it of it’s story. I’m not saying this movie is a bad watch, because it is entertaining, but these kind of movies go straight to DVD nowadays and no one ever talks about them, so why is this one special?
There isn’t much else I can say here. Same characters, same action, simpler story that is neither good nor bad. I would say the only reason to watch this is because you just have to know what happens next. Otherwise, there are plenty of better things to watch. Co-starring Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Alon Aboutboul, and Radha Mitchell.
5/10 Stars – This isn’t a good movie, but it also isn’t a bad movie. They took all the heart out of the first movie and made this into a pure action piece.
