Magic Mike (2012)
Based loosely around the real life of Channing Tatum, Magic Mike is the story of Mike, a 30 year old entrepeneur who dreams of making one-of-a-kind custom furniture. Until he is able to come up with enough money to make this dream a reality, he is a male dancer working at “Exquisite” for a man named Dallas (Matthew McConaughey). He has worked for Dallas for 6 years and decides to bring a new friend, Adam aka “The Kid” (Alex Pettyfer) into the beefcake scene. Adam’s sister Brooke (Cody Horn) isn’t to keen on the idea of her brother stripping, but Mike helps her warm up to the whole lifestyle. Life is going well until Adam starts dabbling in drugs which makes Mike rethink his whole position in life.
When I first saw a preview for Magic Mike, I had do desire to see it, as I’m sure many men did as well. However, after I read an article on the movie, 2 things changed my mind. First off, Magic Mike is directed by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Trilogy, Traffic, Erin Brockovich) and it was his idea, so I knew it was going to be a quality movie. Secondly, I heard that it was the true story of Channing Tatum, who would be playing himself, so I was intrigued as well. With so many positive reviews before it’s release, I decided to give it a shot. To the guys out there, I want to say that it has just as much female nudity as male, so don’t worry about seeing a 2 hour movie about naked dudes. Besides, when the dudes are ripping their clothes off, it is done in a comical way and the segments don’t run on so long that the story is lost. Speaking of story, Magic Mike’s tale is well acted and has plenty of heart and emotion. Not many movies are made light-heartedly and then turn out to be quality as well. Don’t get me wrong, this is still a movie about guys stripping, but it has a human element as well that shows how a young man grew up to find himself. Co-starring Olivia Munn, Kevin Nash, and Gabriel Iglesias.
7/10 Stars – Channing Tatum is starting to take Hollywood by storm after strong performances in this and 21 Jump Street this year!
Its only half a lie if I say I wasn’t excited to see Magic Mike. I wasn’t eagerly anticipating it like with some big flick like Harry Potter etc., but I was looking forward to it for sure. I mean what woman wouldn’t look forward to seeing a movie that has hot men Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey stripping down to their skivvies…Guys if your gal wasn’t interested in this movie even a little, check her pulse! Anyway, it was worth the wait. Aside from getting to see the hot men running around half naked, you get a great story too. And the story even includes a little romance. You can’t miss Soderbergh’s influence. It’s all over in the coloring of the film (reminded me a lot of Erin Brockovich) and the camera angles. Gives what could have been a C movie and added dramatic and artsy flare…in a good way. Channing Tatum is great, but playing “himself” in the movie you would expect nothing less. I think this is a good date night movie, and the men will come away with just as much as the ladies. Two thumbs up from me!
8/10 Stars – Surprisingly heartfelt for what it is, and I couldn’t get enough of shirtless Tatum and nude bottom McConaughey!
