Mission Impossible (1996)
Just finished watching the 1996 original Mission Impossible.
First thing that came to mind was, WOW this movie was made the same year my sister was born, and it holds up pretty well for a nearly 16 year old film.
Tom Cruise has surprisingly few lines in the movie. This is truly an action focused movie. I think the most memorable moment and the one that makes the movie is the scene in the quiet and temp controlled room in Langley where Tom Cruise is sprawled hanging just barely above the touch sensitive floor with sweat dripping down his face. While the action is great, the story leaves you dazed and confused. You aren’t given many clues as to how Tom’s character Ethan figures out who Job is and why he did what he did. You are expected to follow his unclear train of thought.
Overall I would give this movie a 7 out of 10. Definitely worth watching more than once but not a top 50 movie of all time. And who can forget the theme song…it will probably appear in my dreams tonight 🙂
I first saw Mission Impossible when I was 14 years old, and still 15 years (and about 20 views) later I’m still finding new things I didn’t catch the previous time. That could either be a good or a bad thing. It’s full of suspense, twists and turns, but it’s also full of things that make you scratch your head. The familiar faces (Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Ving Rhames, Jean Reno) make catching the plot twists a little easier but with as many twists as there are, I sometimes can’t keep everything straight (which is why I keep watching.) It was the beginning of a franchise that now has 4 total movies and is on my personal Top 100 list. Be prepared to want to watch over and over again!
8/10 Stars – Suspenseful, Action packed and clever without needing any guns.
