Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
Set on a small island in New England in 1965, Moonrise Kingdom is the story of Suzy and Sam; 2 12-year-olds who strike up an unusual romance upon first meeting. Suzy has anger issues at school and with her parents and wants to runaway with Sam who knows a great deal about the wilderness through Khaki Scouts. Once together, they venture forth and spend special moments together while the rest of the island is out looking for them. No matter what happens, the 2 vow they will be with each other forever and will do anything they can to make sure that happens.
Since Moonrise Kingdom wasn’t a wide release, I didn’t hear about it until all the critics gave it so much praise so I decided to check it out… and I’m glad I did. Directed by Wes Anderson (Fantastic Mr. Fox, Rushmore, The Royal Tenebaums), Moonrise Kingdom is cute, sweet, charming, fascinating, funny, original, colorful and surprisingly full of famous faces. It stars Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Harvey Keitel, Tilda Swinton, Bob Balaban and Jason Schwartzman. However, the 2 newcomers, Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward, are the real stars of the show. They have a unique chemistry that usually doesn’t come with young actors, let alone for their first roles. All in all, I’m glad I went and saw this and would recommend it to anyone who asks.
8/10 Stars – Sweet and charming, this odd comedy will not disappoint.
