My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
My Big Fat Greek Wedding was one of those sleeper movies that didn’t make it big till after being released on DVD. Starring Nia Vardalos as Toula a 30-year-old Greek woman who works in her family’s restaurant, Dancing Zorba’s, and still lives with her parents. Her father Gus (Michael Constantine) asks her every day when she is going to marry a nice Greek boy. But Toula is looking for more in life. So she and her mother and aunts concoct a plan to convince Gus to let her take some computer classes at college (making him think it’s his idea). With those classes under her belt, she takes over her aunt’s travel agency (again making her father think it’s his idea). Through the whole process she slowly transforms from an ugly duckling to a swan. As she begins to live the life she always dreamed of, she meets the man of her dreams, Ian Miller (John Corbett). Only one problem, he isn’t Greek, and her father doesn’t like it. But he has to accept it, just like Ian has to accept Toula’s large crazy family and Toula has to accept herself. Also starring Lainie Kazan, Andrea Martin, Louis Mandylor, Joey Fatone, Gia Carides, Ian Gomez.
I love My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It is funny, heart-felt and a great story. I can see how this movie got lost in amongst all the blockbusters movies out there, it doesn’t really have any big names in it. Well except John Corbett who is only a big name to Sex and the City fans who know his as Aidan Shaw (sigh). Every woman can relate to what Toula is going through on some level. Michael Constantine is the surprising comedic relief of this romantic comedy. He is the grumpy old man who has to learn to accept that his daughter wants more than to marry a good Greek boy and make many Greek babies. And who knew there were so any uses for Windex.
10/10 Stars – Everyone should see this movie plain and simple! You will laugh, cry and just have a great time.
Just like everyone else out there, I didn’t hear about My Big Fat Greek Wedding until it has its wide release after the word-of-mouth hype. It is one of the funniest movies out there that appeals to everyone; male, female, young, or old. It appears on my personal top 100 list due to the brilliant nature of its characters and how freaking funny it really is. I hope you have seen this movie by now… but if you haven’t, what are you waiting for?
9/10 Stars – Smart, charming, funny and family friendly
