Ocean’s Trilogy (2001-2007)
In 1960 the “Rat Pack” made a movie named Ocean’s 11 about a group of men attempting to rob a Las Vegas casino. In 2001, award-winning director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Erin Brockovich, Contagion), directed the remake with 2 quality sequels to follow in 2004 and 2007. The following is a list of actors in all 3 films (with the new additions mentioned in the movie’s section); George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Bernie Mac, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Eddie Jemison, Andy Garcia, and Elliot Gould.
Ocean’s 11 is about a man named Danny Ocean (George Clooney). Danny has a very large bone to pick with Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia) because his ex-wife Tess(Julia Roberts) is with him. Danny decides he wants to rob 3 of the biggest casinos in Vegas. All 3 with the same vault. All 3 owned by Benedict. He assembles a large crew in order to pull off a heist of this magnitude since no one has ever successfully robbed a Las Vegas casino. Ocean’s 11 is one of the most clever and witty movies I’ve ever seen. It made my personal top 100 list due to the large cast, the humor and the sweet ending. If you haven’t seen this movie yet, why not?
Ocean’s 12 sees Benedict seeking revenge on Danny, Tess and the whole crew by tracking them down 1 by 1 and demanding his money back plus interest. The only way this group know’s how to quickly get that kind of money is to steal it of course. The only problem this time around is Danny and crew have competition. A man named Night Fox (Vincent Cassel) has a large reputation overseas as a master thief and has already taken several of the items Danny wants. What is Danny to do? Well he tracks down the Night Fox and makes a game out of it for the first man to steal a rare Faberge egg. New addition to the movie is Catherine Zeta-Jones who plays ex-girlfriend to Rusty (Brad Pitt) and top investigator into the Night Fox and now Ocean’s crew. Not as great as the first, Ocean’s 12 still has the wit and charm of the first with some nice new faces such as the 2 mentioned above and Eddie Izzard. Bruce Willis even makes a cameo as himself.
Ocean’s 13 sees the departure of Tess (Julia Roberts) and the addition of Willy Bank (Al Pacino), the new big casino owner adding to the Vegas strip. Reuben (Elliot Gould) was in a partnership with Bank, but suffers a heart attack when Bank betrays him and forces him out of ownership. Danny and crew decide to step in and help Reuben by sabotaging Bank’s grand opening by making everyone win, and win big! The only problem is they have no money to get things started so Danny does something he wish he never had to do, asks Benedict for help. Ocean’s 13 returns to it’s more straight forward roots from the first and Pacino does a great job as the snide and greedy hotel owner. Ellen Barkin takes over the role as the main female lead and is the hotel manager for Mr. Bank and Vincent Cassel makes an appearance as the Night Fox.
10/10 Stars for Ocean’s 11 – Perfect witty, clever heist movie
9/10 Stars for Ocean’s 12 – Nice return for the crew and the additional cast in ways makes things better
8/10 Stars for Ocean’s 13 – In my opinion, the weakest of the 3 due to lack of twists.
