On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969)
On Her Majestys Secret Service picks up at the end of You Only Live Twice with James Bond (George Lazenby), 007, having spent nearly two years attempting to hunt down the leader of SPECTRE Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Telly Savalas). Without any success, Bond is removed from the case but of course that doesn’t sit well with him so he takes leave in order to finish the job on his own. This time in his travels he meets with and rescues several times the Contessa Teresa Di Vicenzo (Diana Rigg) the daughter of Marc Ange Draco (Gabriele Ferzetti) a construction magnate and known crime boss who impressed by Bond and wishes him to marry his daughter because he thinks she will be happy then. Draco persuades Bond to consider it by supplying him with information regarding how to find Blofeld. When Bond finds Blofeld he is acting the part of a philanthropist at a clinic in Switzerland that treats and eradicates allergies. But its more than that of course and it all comes down to blackmail. In the end Bond defeats Blofeld and realizes that Tracy is a girl he can surely settle down with and give up his bachelor ways. Also starring Ilse Steppat, George Baker, Bernard Lee, Lois Maxwell, Desmond Llewelyn, Angela Scoular.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is the very worst of the films in my opinion. I don’t see how the critics as a majority like it. George Lazenby is an inferior Bond after the suave and debonair Sean Connery. But that aside the plot for this Bond flick isn’t near as exhilarating as the others. It lacks the action we as the audience have come to expect. Also more than a few times the camera work is extremely chaotic or just down right fake and then scenes are badly edited. The score is poor and doesn’t have the true Bond feel. Just blah to all of it. Even Bond’s conquests of women, while previously chauvinistic they did often serve a purpose or were a little fun, now they are just chauvinistic. Sorry I just don’t like this one so I have nothing good to say about it really but then everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
4/10 Stars – Just a dark spot in an otherwise entertaining and fun series.
