Resident Evil (2002)
Alice (Milla Jovovich) awakens in a secluded mansion, not remembering who or where she is. When a group of operatives armed with guns come crashing through her windows, they inform her that deep below the mansion is a place called “The Hive” controlled by the mega-corperation Umbrella. The dreaded T-Virus was released down in The Hive, infecting all the workers, so the security system put the place on lockdown, virtually killing everyone inside. However, the T-Virus is a special virus that can keep the dead “alive” and turns them into flesh-eating zombies. Now the team has to escape the Hive with the anti-virus, and their lives, battling against the most horrifying creatures anyone has ever seen.
As a big big big fan of the original Playstation game and everything the original games stood for, the Resident Evil movie just takes a big dump on everything we loved. First off, the story has no creativity or substance compared to the game. The focal point of the games was the mansion, and it was in the movie for like 5 minutes. Also what made the games great were the scary creatures, and other than the dogs and zombies, the Tyrant and the Hunters are missing. The Hunters were the scariest and my personal favorite and they haven’t been in any of the movies to date. The ending “bad guy” was the Licker, who was just an average monster in the 2nd game, so nothing special. Speaking of the 2nd game, the story and places look more like they were from the 2nd game… but in reverse. If they wanted to incorporate the 2nd game into the movie, that’s fine, but where is Leon and Claire? Just so many things wrong with a movie trying to pass itself off as being affiliated with Resident Evil. Silent Hill did a much better job! Co-starring Michelle Rodriguez.
5/10 Stars – I still watch it because it has glimpse of the game, but ultimately it fails at EVERY level.
