In the not too distant future set in Detroit, a major tech company called Omnicorp is looking for the worlds first robot policeman. When the first prototype goes horribly wrong, they decide to place a human inside one of these machines, but they first need a candidate for the experiment. When officer Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) dies on duty, he is the most logic choice to become Robocop; half human, half machine.
In this futuristic, crime fighting, action thriller, Robocop fits in nicely as the epitome of an 80’s action movie. With a decent story and characters we like, the high amount of violence is what makes Robocop worth watching. This movie doesn’t want to be a light weight as far as shock value goes. Within the first 10 minutes, the movie already gives us a scene that is up there in terms of “memorable.” However, with a whole decade full of movies like this, Robocop isn’t alone in its ideas. Everything here is done quite well and is highly entertaining, but one might argue that so many other movies did the same thing at this time, so what makes Robocop stand out? I have to answer that question with “nothing, but is 1 more great sci-fi action thriller a bad thing?” I would say that Robocop closely mimics The Terminator as far as on screen effects go (when Robocop takes off the visor near the end and shows human/robotic parts at the same time, machine wielding guns, bullets can’t hurt him, etc.) but Robocop does it differently enough that we can love both! I will say that some of the other great action flicks of the 80’s probably do shine brighter than this, and that’s probably because Robocop doesn’t have names like Schwarzenegger, Gibson, Glover, Willis, Weaver and so on. With the new “reboot” coming in 2014 (and yes I have seen it already) I have to say, this is the Robocop to watch! Way more action, way more human! Co-starring Nancy Allen, Kurtwood Smith, Miguel Ferrer, Dan O’Herlihy and Ronny Cox.
8/10 Stars – Might not be The Terminator, Lethal Weapon, or Die Hard, but this movie holds its own for being a great action movie of the 80’s.
