Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)
3 writers, Darius (Aubrey Plaza), Jeff (Jake M. Johnson) and Arnau (Karan Soni), from a Seattle based magazine travel to check out a peculiar ad they see in the newspaper. The ad reads – “Wanted: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You’ll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. Safety not guaranteed.” Once they find out who this guy is, Darius is the one picked to pose as the one answering the ad. The guys name is Kenneth (Mark Duplass) and seems harmless, but he does seem to believe that he truly can go back in time. Darius has to figure out why he wants to go back in time and just how he plans to do it. As Darius learns more and more about Kenneth, she begins to believe his craziness and must figure out for herself what is real as she begins to develope feelings for him.
Safety Not guaranteed is a truly original and heart-felt film. Even with its short run time, it is able to create and develop characters that we care about and wonder what will happen to them. There is a large contrast of personality types in the 4 main characters that play off one another. Darius is the silent, tomboy loner who never had many friends. Jeff is the arrogant, successful middle-age guy who is realizing he isn’t as young as he once was. Arnua is just looking to fit in, but due to his culture and background rather than just being anti-social. Kenneth is just trying to set things right in his own life. He wants to save the one person he remembers being nice to him from dying and will sacrifice a lot just to do it. The only thing I wish was stronger in the film was the level of comedy because it was a little dry, but at a run time of 89 minutes, I didn’t mind. Co-starring Mary Lynn Rajskub, Kristen Bell, and Jenica Bergere.
8/10 Stars – Sweet, charming and well-defined characters help make this original film one to go see!
