Saw (2004)

His Review:

What happens when you wake up in a shit-hole secluded bathroom chained to a wall by the ankle with another guy in the same situation and a dead guy laying in between you?  Adam (Leigh Whannell) and Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes) about to participate in a deadly game that has been created by the mastermind “Jigsaw.” Jigsaw takes pathetic, unethical and unappreciative people and puts then into “situations” where they can either do nothing and die, or survival, but at a cost.  Adam and Dr. Gordon are the newest plays in Jigsaw’s game and the results are terrifying and shocking.

Coming in at #5 on my personal top 100 list, newcomer director James Wan (Insidious, Dead Silence, Death Sentence) sure hit a home run with the start of a franchise that spans 7 movies before it finally ended.  Saw is one of the top psychological thrillers I’ve even seen and the ending is one that had me jump out of my seat, literally in the theater.  It is suspenseful, shocking, twisted and brilliant.  The feel and settings for Saw is similar to that of Seven with the grunge and the filth but Saw will make you twist and turn even more.  If it wasn’t for the ending, Saw would be just another forgotten horror film that had decent moments, but the ending is so great, that it spurred 6 more movies.  Co-starring Danny Glover and Tobin Bell.

10/10 Stars – Horror isn’t meant to be great, just shocking, and Saw is both.

Her Review:

If it weren’t for my wonderful husband I probably never ever in a million freakin’ years watched Saw.  It is not my cup of tea.  Its not that I don’t like horror or scary movies, because they are often well made films.  The simple truth is that I am a chicken, I scare easily etc. I am that person who if you watch a scary movie with will scream and jump into your lap. Saw amazed me.  I wouldn’t define it as a horror or even a scary movie really.  It messes with your head, which is what I love about it.  I actually didn’t figure out the ending like I do with every other movie out there.  The plot had me from the start.  And the ending is awesome!  I am actually glad I was forced to watch it.

10/10 Stars – Your jaw will drop when you watch this movie.
