Silent Hill (2006)
Based on the first 2 games of the popular video game franchise, Silent Hill is the story of Rose (Radha Mitchell) and her adopted daughter Sharon (Jodelle Ferland). Sharon has been having nightmares surrounding her childhood that continue to lead her to the mysterious city of Silent Hill. Her mother feels the only way to stop the nightmares is to take her to the city, against her husband’s (Sean Bean) wishes. Once there, Rose is separated from Sharon and is forced to explore the city as prisoner of Cybil Bennett (Laurie Holden), a local police officer, yet they soon become a team against the nightmares that await them once the sirens sound.
Let me just start by saying, I am a huge Resident Evil and Silent Hill fan and have played the core original games that made both franchises what they are today. When the Resident Evil movie came out, like most, I was disappointed and upset that one of the best video games out there was transposed to the big screen in poor fashion. Well the other great survival horror game series has made up for it… Silent Hill lives up to everything the games have been, and depicts it all very well. This is an original story, yet the creatures, places and settings are all very much like they were in the first 2 games of the Silent Hill series; the fog covering the city, the sirens that can be heard all over the city to change the world from what you could call “normal” to the metal and chains of the demonic world, and of course, Pyramid head! I defiantly felt like I was back in Silent Hill. However, there always has to be some drawbacks, especially when they are expected in a “game-to-movie” style. The one big complaint I have is that the “outside” regular world (surrounding Sean Bean’s character) takes away from the eeriness of Silent Hill. As most of the gamers know, in the game, we are always in Silent Hill and don’t drift from the nightmarish world. It just took away the over all feel at times. The ending also caught be by surprise, but in a good way. It is sick and twisted and will live up to the Silent Hill name! A sequel is coming in Oct 2012 titled Silent Hill: Revelations.
9/10 Stars – The best video game adaptation I have seen. I only wish Resident Evil was done this way.
