The CIA is hot on the trail of a rogue nuclear weapon when they learn that the identity of their top agents are compromised. This leads to the need of someone who has some skills in the field without anyone knowing what they look like, and the person who steps up is computer analyst Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) who frankly is the last person anyone would suspect as a threat.
In what is basically a comedy/action espionage spoof, Spy takes several of Hollywood’s biggest stars (Jude Law, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy) and lets them be over the top and crazy. With Melissa McCarthy being dangerously close to being typecast (I think she already is), Spy lets her do stick with what she knows best, while adding a lot more action to the mix (even more that Heat).
I wasn’t sure what to do with Spy when I saw the previews since this type of movies has been done over and over, but with its talented cast, decent story, and slapstick comedy, Spy is one that will entertain. It will fit with many demographics and age ranges so I think it will be hard to find someone who just flat out won’t have a good time watching this movie.
Sure the action is absurd at times, and Melissa McCarthy’s fighting is ridiculous, but who cares… it’s a spoof remember! Anyone who takes this movie seriously is going to have a bad time. The only negative thing I have to say about Spy is that it could have been funnier. I didn’t laugh out loud as much as I expected, and Melissa McCarthy’s awkwardness can sometimes take away from the enjoyment. These are minor and personal things I noted, but others may agree.
All in all, Spy fits in well with all the other spy spoof movies out there. It will entertain and it will make you laugh, but don’t expect it to be revolutionary or original. Co-starring Bobby Cannavale, Allison Janney, Miranda Hart, Morena Baccarin, Peter Serafinowicz, and 50 Cent.
7/10 Stars – Even though it is at most a spy spoof comedy, Spy will entertain from beginning to end and will have you laughing from time to time… even if it is nervous laughter.
