His Review:
When Charles Farmer (Billy Bob Thornton) is close to finishing his project of building a rocket in his own barn with intentions to launch himself into outer space, he needs to buy very special and dangerous rocket fuel. Well… the government tracks that kind of thing and so Mr. Farmer has all kinds people coming to his door trying to get him to stop working on the “missile” or they will shoot him out of the sky when he launches. Charles doesn’t believe this and doesn’t see what he is doing as illegal, but has fulfilling a dream. His family supports him, but when they run out of money and his wife (Virginia Madsen) starts to think the worst of what could happen, tensions fly. Charles must now decide whether his dream in space is bigger than his dreams on Earth.
When I sat down to watch The Astronaut Farmer, I was expecting something more dramatic and funny but I was let down. This is a family film that you might catch on Lifetime because it tries to teach a lesson and be inspirational, but it does a weak job… for adults. Kids might take more out of this and learn more, but as a major motion picture, I felt it could have had a little more quality. All in all, this movie can be missed for lacking in passion and drama and will only be remembered for being the movie about the guy who builds his own rocket. Co-starring Bruce Willis and J.K. Simmons.
6/10 Stars – Not a “bad” movie, just blah and boring
