The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
The Cabin in the Woods is a comedic horror film that is about, without giving too much of the unique story away, a group of 5 friends who are heading to a secluded “cabin in the woods” for the weekend. Once there, they begin to explore and discover a cellar with a lot of old family things from people who use to live there. That is when the killings begin, but not for reasons you might think… seeing as this horror film turns things upside down.
So on the surface, this movie looks just like a one-dimensional slasher flick with dumb teens and some zombies that come back from the dead. However, unlike many horror films, The Cabin in the Woods has many levels of enjoyment that will keep you VERY interested. First off, there is another story that follows the 5 teens in the cabin. What other story you might ask? Well I will keep that a secret as to not ruin the film, but, for those who have seen the horror movie Identity (on my personal top 100 list), which has a story revolving around the 10 people at the motel and then another story that intertwines about the insane guy on trial who is about to be executed. Secondly, The Cabin in the Woods is both scary and funny all at the same time. It does cut down on the amount of lasting tension that can be created, but it’s unique and welcomed. The humor is more at the beginning and the scary action is heavy at the end. There really isn’t anything negative I would say about this movie, but I do have a suggestion that could have made the ending better, but it’s a horror film, so any ending is decent. If you are someone who is bored with the crap horror out there, go see this movie. It’s a welcomed change of pace that makes you think! Starring Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Richard Jenkins, Fran Kranz, Anna Hutchison, Bradley Whitford and Sigourney Weaver.
9/10 Stars – Starts off a little slow and confusing, but picks up speed fast and fun!
I am not a big fan of horror films, but I can appreciate them as a genre and every now and then I run across one or two that I actually consider to be decent cinema. The Cabin in the Woods happens to be one of those. At first you think it is just another slasher horror flick, but the reality is that its anything but! Props to the writers and the director for creating something with a little bit of humor, decent horror and a very original idea to top it all off. Like all other horror films this isn’t for everyone but if you can stomach the gore, which really isn’t horrible, then pick a copy of this one because you won’t be disappointed.
9/10 Stars – Can’t believe I am giving a horror film a 9 but even I was amazed at this one!
