The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)
Edmond Dantes (Jim Caviezel) is a young man sailor who is in love with girlfriend Mercedes (Dagmara Dominczyk). His best friend, Fernand Mondego (Guy Pearce) secretly is in love with Mercedes and wants Edmond’s life. When given the opportunity, Fernand, along with fellow aristocrat in office Villefort (James Frain), frames Edmond for a crime he didn’t commit and sends him to the dreaded Chateau d’If for 13 years. Here, with only the help from another inmate Abbe Faria (Richard Harris), Edmond plots his revenge on the people who ruined his life. He is told of a legend about a famous treasure on island of Monte Cristo and plans to find this treasure to support his rise to power as the Count of Monte Cristo. Now all he has to do is escape…
Appearing on my personal top 100 list and written by famous author Alexandre Dumas (The Three Musketeers, Man in the Iron Mask), The Count of Monte Cristo is an excellent tale of heart-break and revenge. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it, and since then, I have taken a note at anything Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce have been in. It is full of action, adventure and has some nice sword fighting scenes, but the best is the end when the Count is revealed as Dantes. Probably the best showcase of sweet revenge I’ve ever seen, The Count of Monte Cristo is a wonderfully told story.
9/10 Stars – Wonderfully told story by Alexandre Dumas, Revenge is dish best served with plenty of treasure!
