The Fate of the Furious (2017)
Now that Brian and Mia have road off into the sunset together, the crew is off doing their own thing and living their lives as they wish, but when Dom (Vin Diesel) steals an EMP bomb from Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) declares that he has gone rogue. In reality, Dom is being blackmailed by a notorious cyber criminal named Cipher (Charlize Theron) who has his son hostage, and he must do anything she says or else he will be killed. Since the team is without their leader, Mr. Nobody tells Hobbs that he must work side by side with the last person he ever wants to see again, Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), while the rest of the team tries to uncover what is going on with Dom.
I figured that when Paul Walker died that the series would be coming to a close after this movie, and with a name like “Fate of the Furious,” it only made sense that this would be the conclusion. However, it was announced that in 2019 the 9th installment will be coming! So don’t expect any sad goodbyes here! Oh and if you are reading this and have no idea what I’m talking about, this is the 8th movie in a long series that started in 2001, click here.
As far as the movie goes, this is just another juggernaut in the series since Fast Five as the crew keeps getting bigger and louder. With the departure of Paul Walker and Jordana Brewster, new faces have been added. Nathalie Emmanuel and Kurt Russell are back from Furious 7 and Scott Eastwood now joins the team as an FBI rookie who is extremely green. Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris are also back in full force as the comic relieve of the bunch and The Rock is back in a bigger role from the last movie.
If there is one thing I can say about this franchise is that each movie has something huge and memorable about its ending (Vault Heist, Tank & Military Plane, Helicopter chase with God’s Eye) and this one is no exception. Talk about ridiculous crazy action that will entertain and awe any crowd! It loved it and this movie fits right in with the rest. The beginning might be a little slow and that race at the very beginning is stupid in terms of acting, but once Dom turns rogue, things move in the right direction. Plus, it is always a good thing when old characters return!
At the end of the day, the people who love this franchise are going to love this movie and the people who can’t get into crazy action and fast cars, well, you aren’t going to find anything special here. I welcome more to this series and enjoyed this from (almost) beginning to end! Co-starring Michelle Rodriguez, Luke Evans, and Helen Mirren.
8/10 Stars – The series is still fun and fresh as the stunts get crazier and louder! Plenty of high speed entertainment!
