The Fifth Element (1997)

His Review:

Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) is a washed up ex-cop who drives a cab in a futuristic world where everything is traced electronically and flying cars exist.  When a strange girl crashes into his cab, he doesn’t know exactly what to do until several different people come looking for her.  One of those people is a Priest, Victor Cornelius (Ian Holm) who needs Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) because she is the 5th element.  What does that mean?  Well a long time ago, a group of peaceful aliens came to earth to claim powerful stones that represented the 4 major elements (fire, earth, wind, water) because they weren’t safe on Earth.  Now, back in present time, 4 centuries later, there is a giant ball of fire heading towards earth, and the only way to stop it is the 4 stones in combination with the 5th element.  That means that Dallas, who is taking the role of Leeloo’s protector and “husband”, must make sure that he finds the hidden stones and unites them with the 5th Element.  The only problem is there are evil men and monsters that want the fireball to hit Earth.

I remember the day I saw this in theatres as a teenager.  It was during the days when I would ride my bike to a theatre and watch 4 movies back to back.  The Fifth Element was movie #3 for the day and I really had no expectations except that it had Bruce Willis so I should like it.  It blew me away by the amount of fun, adventure and action it had and to this very day I give it high praise by putting it in my personal top 100 list for the true sci-fi action feel it gives.  Bruce Willis is always a great action star and this movie really made Milla Jovovich the action star she is today (even though she sucks at it).  The Fifth Element also has a sense of human emotion throughout as innocent Leeloo learns about love, life and her purpose.  If you haven’t seen the Fifth Element, I strongly recommend this movie!  Co-starring Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker and Luke Perry.

10/10 Stars – The ideal futuristic sci-fi action thriller!
