The Gift (2015)
When Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall) movie into a new stylish house with plenty of open space, they need to fill it with all sorts of new home decor. While shopping, Simon runs into someone he knew from high school named Gordo (Joel Edgerton) who seems to be social awkward yet innocent. Over the next few weeks, Gordo drops by the house unexpectedly and leaves small gifts on the doorstep which causes Simon and Robyn to become very uncomfortable. After setting Gordo straight that he must leave them alone, many strange things begin to happen to Simon and Robyn that not only put a strain on their marriage, but also their lives.
The Gift is an interesting movie. From the looks of the previews, I didn’t think that the casting of a comedian (Bateman) would work in a thriller like this. Edgerton seemed out of place and not that creepy which led me to have low expectations for the movie. However, when I saw the reviews giving this movie high praise, I was excited to see what it offered, and I must say that my first impressions were correct.
I was expecting a suspense thriller with plenty of creepy moments, but what we ended up getting was a movie about a friendly man who just didn’t know how to be socially adequate. Sure there is a history between Simon and Gordo that adds weight to the story, however, if Simon wasn’t such an asshole, I don’t think that history would have ever come into play. Once the feel of the movie turns and Gordo becomes dangerous, nothing really happens. Sure we find out more about everyone’s history, but basically turns into Simon yelling at everyone and some fish dying.
Sure the ending has some tension and creepiness to it, but I still believe that the ambiguous nature of the story and the fact that if Simon had just been nice to Gordo, none of this would have happened. I wasn’t impressed by the movie and I have to say that the Gift was just a lackluster thriller that was more annoying than creepy.
6/10 Stars – It has its moments, but ultimately it is lackluster and avoidable. Just goes to show what being nice can do!
