The Hangover (2009)
On the eve of Doug’s (Justin Bartha) wedding, his best friends Stu (Ed Helms) and Phi (Bradley Cooper) decide they need to take him to Las Vegas for his bachelor party, however, Doug’s soon to be brother-in-law Alan (Zach Galifianakis) is also invited by default. Things take a turn for the worst when Stu, Phil and Allen wake up the next morning with a horrible hangover because they were drugged and can’t find Doug. They now must retrace their steps to get Doug back home before his wedding.
As we all know, this kind of premise for a movie is everywhere – bachelor party gone wrong – but this one is a little unusual. First off, the story has enough crazy moments to keep things fresh like the tiger in the bathroom and Mike Tyson. The introduction of Zach Galifianakis to mainstream comedy is also a big plus. My one beef with the Hangover is that I never really “laughed out loud.” I mean sure I chuckled from time to time, but its more stupid jokes that I never really “got.” I’m more about smart, sarcastic humor so the true genius that many of the critics see is lost on me. Now having said that, and the fact that I’m writing this review AFTER seeing the 2nd and 3rd movies, The Hangover is a fresh movie that will have many people entertained. I just think there is better out there, that’s all… Co-starring Heather Graham, Jeffrey Tambor, Ken Jeong, Mike Tyson, Rob Riggle and Mike Epps.
7/10 Stars – I can see the fresh nature of the story, but the lack of true laughs is what lowers it for me.
