The Holiday (2006)
Iris (Kate Winslet) lives in Surrey, England and is having the worse time with men. Amanda (Cameron Diaz) lives in L.A. and is having the same problems. As the holidays approach, Amanda and Iris find each other on the internet and decide to “home swap” for several days to “escape” their normal lives. Once Iris gets set up in LA, she meets an elderly man (Eli Wallach) who use to be in the movies and helps him get motivated to accept a prestigious award. She also meets a friend of Amanda’s named Miles (Jack Black) whom she begins to find to be more than a friend. Amanda, on the other side of the pond, meets Iris’s brother Graham (Jude Law) and love begins to bloom. The downside to all the new relationships forming is that Iris and Amanda are set to return home before New Years.
The Holiday is the kind of romantic comedy that has plenty of likable characters portrayed by plenty of likeable actors. Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Jack Black are right at home together and offer plenty of charm and warm moments. The Holiday may be predictable and something we’ve seen over and over, but the unique idea of having the 2 stories take place in 2 different countries is fresh and funny. At the end of the day, the formula of the Holiday might be tried and true, but no woman on earth will dislike it, and guys, it’s not a bad watch. C0-starring Edward Burns.
8/10 Stars – Sweet, Charming and a good movie to watch around the holidays
The Holiday is your standard romantic comedy plot wise. For me its the actors that make it extra special. I am typically not a big Cameron Diaz fan but I think the character here suits her well. Kate Winslet I love and she is fabulous paired with Jack Black. The two play off each other perfectly and honestly it’s totally believable that they would be a couple. The added bonus is the appearance of Eli Wallach as Arthur. He is just adorable and his friendship with Winselt’s character is the true highlight of this romantic comedy for me. There isn’t any reason you can’t enjoy this one with the significant other or a night alone at home! Love it!
9/10 Stars – Who doesn’t love a good “meet cute”?
