The Lake House (2006)
When Kate (Sandra Bullock) has to move out of a beautiful lake house, she decides to write the new owner to have all her mail forwarded. This particular lake house, designed by Simon Wyler (Christopher Plummer), seems to be the owner of Alex Wyler (Keanu Reeves), but 2 years in the past. Somehow through space and time, the mailbox at the lake house can transmit mail 2 years from 2004 to 2006 and back. It just so happens that Alex and Kate fall in love though their writing, but somehow need to come together at the right place and time to be together forever.
What seems like a story that could be compared with something Nicholas Sparks wrote, The Lake House was a surprisingly enjoyable film that I remember seeing in the theaters in 2006. I normally don’t gravitate to this kind of romance since it isn’t labeled a comedy, but the 2 leads do a nice job with creating a chemistry we can care about. For women everywhere, they will love and cry with this movie, and guys, you’ll probably think it’s too sappy or girly, but the story keeps things interesting with the time travel effect (if you can get past the absurdity of the premise and buy into the idea of a time traveling mailbox). At the end of the day, unless you are dead inside, this is the kind of simple romance that the anyone can enjoy especially since we are watching Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. Co-starring Dylan Walsh, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
8/10 Stars – The 2 leads create characters we can care about, and the idea of far off love is something we can all relate with.
