The Mummy Returns (2001)
Several years after the first movie, directed by Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Van Helsing, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), The Mummy Returns picks up with Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Evy (Rachel Weisz) and now their young son Alex (Freddie Boath) on another excavation into the tombs of Egypt. It is now the year of the Scorpion and the Scorpion King (The Rock) will rise to control the world. Humanities only hope is to wake the mummy, Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), and hope that he can stop the Scorpion King. The only problem is that Imhotep has kidnapped Alex so Rick, Evy and her brother, Jonathan (John Hannah) are more interested in stopping Imhotep than keeping him alive.
Bigger and more action packed than the first, The Mummy Returns is a CGI masterpiece that creates a similar feel. Having first seen it as a 19-year-old, The Mummy Returns left a very good impression on me and I enjoyed it for all it is worth, but now 11 years later, and having seen movies that are bigger and more entertaining, The Mummy Returns seems smaller and just another routine Sci-fi action thriller. It is kinda bittersweet to think about it, but that doesn’t mean the movie is bad or not exciting, it just means that it no longer belongs in my personal top 100. Co-starring Oded Fehr, Patricia Velasquez and Shaun Parkes.
9/10 Stars – A huge CGI blockbuster that seems smaller now 11 years later.
