The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004)
Her Review:
Directed by Garry Marshall, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement picks up where its Princess Diaries left off. Now Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) is living in Genovia and is preparing to take the throne as queen of the country. But on top of that she must now be married before she can be crowned, per Genovian law. Now the awkward ugly duckling must not only learn to be Queen she has to fall in love. In addition to Julie Andrews’ reprisal of her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, The Princess Diaries 2 also stars Hector Elizondo, John Rhys-Davies, Heather Matarazzo and Chris Pine.
Though Princess Diaries author Meg Cabot did pen several sequels to her original novel, this film is not an adaptation of any of those. Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement wasn’t as clever or fun as the first one. It just seemed to be trying to hard really and perhaps that is because it was an original script and didn’t follow the story laid out by Meg Cabot. Despite this it is still enjoyable to watch, mainly because of the adorable Chris Pine and really what girl can’t resist a good story of finding true love.
8/10 Stars – Not as great as the original, but still can’t resist a good romance story!
