The Rock (1996)
His Review:
Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage) is chemical weapons specialist who works for the FBI. When a group of ex-miliary mercenaries take hostages on Alcatraz, the FBI gets a team ready to infiltrate the island. The only problem is, if no one ever escaped off Alcatraz, then how can anyone sneak into it? Well it just so happens that 1 man, John Mason (Sean Connery), did escape from Alcatraz and after much persuasion, Mason and Goodspeed head with the team to try to stop the mercenaries from launching poison gas over all of San Francisco.
Along with Face/Off and Con Air, The Rock is one of 3 large, loud and action-packed movies in the mid-90s that star Nicolas Cage. Directed by Michael Bay (Bad Boys, Transformers, The Island), The Rock has plenty of guns, explosions and suspense to keep any action fan entertained for 2 hours. Knowing that it is directed by Michael Bay, don’t expect an intricate story by any means and you will rarely use your brain. Even though the idea and premise of the movie isn’t anything new, the fact that it takes place on Alcatraz and is about rockets with skin-melting poisons sure does set it apart. If you like movies such as Broken Arrow or the 2 I mentioned above, then The Rock will not disappoint. Co-starring Ed Harris, Michael Biehn, David Morse, and John C. McGinley.
9/10 Stars – Plenty of action and suspense, Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery sure don’t disappoint.
