The Terminator (1984)
Directed by newcomer (at the time) James Cameron (Avatar, Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Titanic), The Terminator is about a cybernetic machine (Arnold Schwarzenegger) sent from the year 2029 to 1984. The Terminator is sent by Skynet, the computer that controls the world-dominating machines, to kill the mother of John Connor, the man responsible for the downfall of the machines in the future. Why kill her you might ask? To prevent John from ever being born. John is able to send a human defender, Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) from the Terminator, but even with her protector, the Terminator will stop at nothing until Sarah Connor is dead.
The Terminator is a fast-paced and gripping action thriller. The special effects are kinda cheesy for today’s standards, but for back then, they were some of the best seen in movies. This was only Arnold’s second blockbuster, having released Conan the Barbarian 2 years before, but his role as the Terminator is what he is best known for and stars in the 2nd and 3rd movies that followed. I have always loved the 2nd one more, as most people do, but the story has to start somewhere, and this isn’t a bad place to kick things off.
9/10 Stars – A great start to a great franchise!
