Tropic Thunder (2008)
Tropic Thunder is one of those movies that when you sit down and see it, it surprises the crap out of you. The story revolves around 3 big name movie stars, Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller), Kick Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) and Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), who are teaming up to shoot a giant war blockbuster. When strong pressure is placed on the director (Steve Coogan), he decides to film through hidden cameras while the men trek through the jungle rather than film in a studio, but when the actors run into some real war criminals, they think it’s still part of the film.
Tropic Thunder is a witty satire that stars some of the biggest comedic names in Hollywood. Robert Downey Jr. snagged an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for playing the white guy who is playing a black guy. The big surprise came when Tom Cruise appeared as the fat, balding asshole producer who yells and curses at anything that moves. This was his big return to the screen after he went crazy on Oprah. Tropic Thunder is rated R so it’s laughs are more adult in nature but not as bad as some Kevin Smith written dialogue. If you like any of the big 3 actors, or just like movies that don’t take themselves seriously at all, then check out Tropic Thunder. Co-starring Danny McBride, Nick Nolte, Jay Baruchel, Brandon T. Jackson, and Matthew McConaughey.
8/10 Stars – Witty and Oddly hilarious war picture that stars 3 great comics, plus more.
