His Review:
Directed by the Coen Brothers (No Country for Old Men, Fargo, The Big Lebowski), True Grit is a western about a 14-year-old girl named Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) whose objective is tracking down her father’s killer, Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). Mattie is determined to get her way and she seeks out Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to help her track down Chaney, but Mattie isn’t the only person after Chaney. He is also wanted in Waco, TX for crimes he committed and a bounty hunter LaBoeuf (Matt Damon) is also after him. Mattie isn’t ok with this because she wants Chaney to die for her father’s killing and not for things in Waco. Who will get to Chaney first?
True Grit was one of the “oscar” movies in 2010, being nominated for 10 awards (Best Picture, Cinematography, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, etc.), however it didn’t win any. Not many westerns come around in film these days, and True Grit is a genuine western that is filmed with little special effects, but great cinematography. The acting is superb which isn’t surprising from the strong cast that fit into this genre well. The only negative thing I have to say about it is the plot, it is way to simple for my taste. It’s pretty straight forward and doesn’t have any plot twists nor make you think at all. Either way, I can see how True Grit was praised and is definitely a movie worth seeing. Co-starring Barry Pepper.
8/10 Stars – Westerns aren’t my cup of tea and I enjoyed True Grit
