Under Siege (1992)
His Review:
After a visit from President Bush, the USS Missouri is planning to go out of commission, but not before the skeleton crew throws a surprise birthday party for their Captain. Casey Ryback (Steven Seagal) is the cook on board, but due to disagreements with Commander Krill (Gary Busey), gets locked up in the meat locker. During the time of his detainment, the catering crew, along with the band brought in for the party, takes the ship hostage with the help of Krill. Just as expected, Ryback is able to escape and wreak havoc on the plans of Krill and leader of the band, Strannix (Tommy Lee Jones).
Trying to fit in with the many other action films with a single hero over coming plenty of terrorists, Under Siege fails to provide the movie world with any memorable action moments. I use the description “action moments” specifically because Under Siege does provide 2 memorable scenes, but not for the right reasons. Towards the beginning, we see Gary Busey dressed up as the ugliest woman on the planet doing some kind of dance where his fake boobs pounce around. Simply terrifying! The other scene is when Erika Eleniak jumps out of the birthday cake practically naked which might be great for some, but it’s not what makes a great action movie memorable. Speaking of great action films, you can’t create a decent action film with a run time of 1 hour and 45 minutes and then have your star locked in a room doing nothing but whining for a half hour. I was hoping for more from these actors, but Under Siege leaves me with nothing unique to hold on to.
6/10 Stars – Had promise, but falls flat on its face with a plain script and not much memorable action.
