Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
The strange and mysterious Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) has been making wonderous chocolate treats for many years, but when competitors threaten his business, he shuts down the factory for good. The workers are let do and no one hears from Wonka again. The world goes on as it always has, but when smoke is seen coming out of the factory once again, people begin to talk. One such child named Charlie Buckett (Peter Ostrum) is a poor boy who lives with his mother and 2 sets of bed-ridden grandparents. His Grandpa Joe (Jack Albertson) tells him stories about the factory and how glorious it once was. When an announcement is made that Willy Wonka will put 5 golden tickets into Wonka Bars, allowing 5 people to tour the factory, the world goes crazy as everyone tries to buy up as much Chocolate as they can in order to get a glimpse into the world of Willy Wonka.
One of the magical movies that kids grow up watching, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is based on the book by Roald Dahl. Most think of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory as a family musical, but if you peel back the layers, it is truly a black comedy wrapped in colorful visions and catchy songs. In fact, the music in this movie was nominated for an Academy Award. Gene Wilder plays Willy Wonka perfectly and will always be remembered as the crazy nut in the purple overcoat. This movie will always be one of my all-time favorites and it rounds out my personal top 100 list, holding onto the last spot. If you’re one of the unlucky ones out there in this world not to have seen Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory… what are you waiting for? Co-starring Julie Dawn Cole, Michael Bollner, Denise Nickerson, and Paris Themmen.
10/10 Stars – Probably a focal point of many of our childhood’s, the songs, comedy and colors keeps us in awe.
I just have one question, what kid doesn’t want 1. to be in a room where the whole thing is candy and edible and 2. to inherit an entire chocolate factory? or what adult for that matter! Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is an all time favorite and will always be because it is magical and makes you happy, oh and crave candy of course. Everyone should see this movie, own it and share it with their children. Hey you/they might even learn some unexpected lessons from the movie too.
10/10 Stars – What is an Oompa Loompa?
