Zoolander (2001)
His Review:
Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) is a mindless male model who is approaching the end of his career. The new and young model Hansel (Owen Wilson) is beginning to overshadow Derek and his fame. When Mugatu (Will Ferrell), a famous fashion designer who never wanted to work with Derek before, suddenly requests Derek to come and work for him, Derek is cautious. That is, until he is persuaded by a Russian vixen named Katinka Ingabogovinanana (Milla Jovovich) to attend her day spa where she brainwashed him into wanting to kill the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Directed by the head funnyman himself, and starring much of his family, Zoolander is the perfect blend of satire stupidity and laugh-out-loud comedy. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are always great on the screen together, and with over 20 different cameos, there isn’t a few minutes that goes by without a famous face. The original part of Mugatu was written for Andy Dick (and I can totally see that), but Will Ferrell steps in nicely to don the wing and make-up. Ben Stiller’s wife, Christine Taylor, takes the female lead, and romantic interest of Derek, and puts as much logic and sensibility into the role to counter the morons she stars with. Nothing is funnier than naming a school, “The Derek Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can’t Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too.” If you’re a fan of over the top satires and just good humor from Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell, then see this movie.
8/10 Stars – Understanding it’s suppose to be dumb and stupid will make it THAT much more worth it.
Her Review:
I remember watching this for the first time in high-school of all places. Back then I thought it hilarious. Watching it again more certainly I think my sensibilities have changed drastically cause it was not near as funny as the first time I saw it. It still had moments but it wasn’t as laugh out loud funny as I remember. I think that the younger generation will still totally appreciate it, and I agree that the best part is when Zoolander tries to be good and names his school (see above), that just makes ma laugh. I wouldn’t let your teens watch this because of one scene toward the end but if they can get into rated R movie already then why not, but depending on your age ladies you probably won’t appreciate this. Guys if you enjoy really dumb comedy then you will enjoy.
7/10 Stars – Better when I saw it 10 years ago.
